A solution for speech in noise based on deep learning
Isolating speech from noise — psychologists call it the cocktail party effect, but computer scientists call it the cocktail party problem because software has traditionally been terrible at it.
That changed recently with the advent of deep learning, a form of AI. HeardThat’s founder and CEO, Dr. Bruce Sharpe, learned about this work when his father-in-law’s hearing loss led him to increasingly withdraw from social interactions. Upgrading his hearing aids didn’t solve the problem. HeardThat was developed to build on this AI research to create a practical solution for the noise problem.
The smartphone’s power makes it possible
HeardThat turns the phone into a remote microphone with powerful noise handling abilities. Unlike traditional approaches, HeardThat trains deep learning models on thousands of hours of recordings to learn the difference between speech and noise.
The resulting algorithms are powerful and effective, but they need a lot of power to run. HeardThat offloads the work to the phone because wearables don’t have enough resources to run it themselves.

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), a Canadian government research organization, objectively analyzed HeardThat's processing using industry-standard 3QUEST and ABLE algorithms, revealing substantial enhancements in speech understandability and listening effort.
Focus group testing
HeardThat conducted product validation interviews with real hearing aid users struggling to hear conversations in noisy environments. In a controlled test with restaurant background noise, users repeated sentences they heard both with and without the app.
The outcome was unanimous: 100% reported significant improvements when using HeardThat. The app effectively reduced noise, enhanced speech clarity, and made listening far easier.
